Brewin Dolphin grows Edinburgh office

Wealth manager Brewin Dolphin has grown its team in Edinburgh with the appointment of investment manager Dennis McGrath.

With more than 18 years’ experience in financial services, he joins from 7IM, where he was a team head looking after high net-worth private clients.

McGrath also previously worked at Standard Life Investments.

At Brewin Dolphin, he will be responsible for looking after the investment needs of private clients and corporates.

Johnny McGlynn, head of Brewin Dolphin’s Edinburgh office, said: “His excellent client relationship skills coupled with his financial services experience will prove invaluable as we look to grow our investment management and financial planning services in the region.”

McGrath said: “Brewin Dolphin is a strong brand, and the business has great clients throughout Scotland and beyond - I look forward to meeting and helping both existing and new clients over the coming months and years.”

In addition, Tom O’Brien, financial planner in the Glasgow office, was promoted to divisional director. He joined the company in 2019 having spent more than a decade as a financial planner at Close Brothers.

At the end of January, Brewin Dolphin also appointed David Barclay as its new head of office in Dundee.

In an expansion of his responsibilities, the Aberdeen office head has taken over the role from Ian MacDonald, who is stepping down after 20 years to focus on his existing client book until his retirement at the end of 2022.

Barclay joined the firm's Aberdeen office in 1998 as an investment manager, before being promoted to divisional director in 2006. From 2008 to 2017 he was deputy head of office, before becoming head of office in 2017.

MacDonald joined Brewin Dolphin’s Dundee office in 2002 as a financial planner and has the notable honour of being the first financial planner to become a head of office at Brewin Dolphin when he took over the role in 2007.

Marc Wilkinson, regional managing director for Scotland at Brewin Dolphin, said: “I would like to thank Ian for his hard work and leadership of the Dundee office over the last 15 years.

“I look forward to seeing how David [Barclay] will now take the Dundee office forward with a renewed vision and focus whilst retaining the office’s core value of care for its clients and their financial wellbeing.”

Barclay added: “I am honoured to take the baton from Ian, as he steps down as head of office in Dundee - there is a natural synergy and affinity between these two East Coast offices, and I look forward to working closely and spending more time with my colleagues in the City of Discovery to help our clients achieve their financial goals.”
