Chelsea will head into the international break winless in three league matches after being handed a galling 3-0 defeat by Brentford. Second-half goals from Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho were enough to settle this west London derby, with Chelsea punished for failing to take their plentiful chances.
Jordan Henderson made his full debut for the club against the side he left this summer and suffered a challenging first day in his new colours. He struggled in midfield next to Valentin Barco, with the pair unable to get a foothold in the match. More worrying, though, was Chelsea’s misfiring attack, which totally collapsed without the injured Joao Pedro up top.
There was, of course, an equal and opposite reaction. This dismal result for Chelsea triggered a jubilant celebration for the home supporters, with Keith Andrews perfectly willing to get involved. His own enthusiastic celebrations on the touchline were reflective of a long-running project which is more than ready to trouble the upper echelons of the Premier League. Catch up with the action as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, complete with expert insight and analysis from Oli Gent at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Chelsea player ratings
22:02 , Arthur Ferridge
Levi Colwill 4
Skippered the side in lieu of James, and was steady in possession and measured in his challenge with Thiago. Ultimately oversaw another calamitous defensive display as the leaks began to appear once more in the defensive unit.
Pedro Neto 4
Determined down the right but ultimately not cutting edge in the final third, as shown by his first-half effort that was comfortably parried by Kelleher. Tried to take on Lewis-Potter but found himself doubled up on as Schade carried out his defensive duties. Was found wanting a number of times defensively, with gaps emerging behind him for the hosts to exploit.
Jordan Henderson 4
Met with boos from the home support every time he touched the ball, but things were just too pedestrian from the veteran. Deployed as the sitter of the double pivot, there was a distinct lack of incision in his passing range.

FULL-TIME: Brentford 3-0 Chelsea
21:54 , Arthur Ferridge
Chelsea will be grateful for the final whistle, but it triggers jubilant scenes in the home end. What a night for Brentford!
GOAL! Brentford 3-0 Chelsea | Carvalho '90+4

Fabio Carvalho buries Schade’s cross to make it three! What a night for Brentford, increasingly one to forget for Chelsea.

Chelsea fans are beginning to stream out of the away end here. They've had enough.

Brentford 2-0 Chelsea

Brentford 2-0 Chelsea
21:42 , Arthur Ferridge
85mins: Igor Thiago has been booked for taking off his shirt in celebrating that goal. So too has Sangare, who has just needlessly gone through the back of Barco.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
21:42 , Arthur Ferridge
It's been coming, and the defence leaks again. Superb reading of the game from Ajer to jump into midfield and make the interception, and Sangare and Damsgaard link up to slide Schade in. The visiting defence has stepped up far too high, and the German burns them for pace before looking to slot into the far corner. Martinez saves, but Thiago is alive to the rebound, gobbling it up. Shirt off the from the Brazilian, a hug for Andrews, and three points for Brentford. No win in three for Chelsea.
GOAL! Brentford 2-0 Chelsea | Thiago '83
21:41 , Arthur Ferridge
Igor Thiago makes it two! Kevin Schade streaks away, right through the middle of the park, but fluffs his one-on-one with Martinez, who does well to get a foot to the German’s shot. The rebound falls kindly for Thiago to put away.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:39 , Arthur Ferridge
Two more Brentford changes. The goalscorer Anthony and Lewis-Potter hooked in favour of Ouattara and Diouf.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:38 , Arthur Ferridge
80mins: This corner, I believe Chelsea’s 11th of the evening, again goes short and breaks down after a long-range shot.
What is it they say about the definition of insanity?
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:37 , Arthur Ferridge
80mins: Quenda cuts inside and wins a corner. It is Groundhog Day.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:36 , Arthur Ferridge
78mins: Palmer twists and turns in the penalty box, beating one, two, three, four men! But it is Hickey’s block to deny him what would have been one of the great Premier League goals.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:35 , Arthur Ferridge
The incident is checked and cleared. No penalty.
Chelsea will have to do this the hard way...
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:34 , Arthur Ferridge
77mins: The corner is taken short again and Barco ends up on the floor in the area thereafter. The Blues are adamant they deserve a penalty, but our referee is not having it. Replays show they would probably be lucky to get a spot-kick, but VAR is checking.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:33 , Arthur Ferridge
75mins: Brentford race forward on the counter and Damsgaard sends Thiago in behind, but his backheeled pass to Schade is wayward and the move breaks down. Chelsea respond in kind and Neto manages to win a corner.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:32 , Arthur Ferridge
74mins: Brentford have dropped really deep now. Chelsea’s struggles against a low block are well documented and the Bees will know that full well. Let’s see how the last quarter of an hour plays out here.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
21:31 , Arthur Ferridge
'Jordan, what's the score' is the latest taunt at Henderson from the home fans. That is met by Alonso's change in tact, as he plumps for a back four shape. It looks to be a 4-2-3-1, with new arrival Acheampong at right-back, Neto pushed on to right wing, Quenda on the left flanking Palmer as the No10, with Rogers up top. Boy do they miss Joao Pedro.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:29 , Arthur Ferridge
72mins: That is Welbeck’s last involvement as he comes off for Quenda. Acheampong also replaces Fofana.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:29 , Arthur Ferridge
71mins: Henderson cuts out a loose pass and sends a lovely cross to Welbeck, but he is penalised for shoving away Lewis-Potter.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
21:27 , Arthur Ferridge
A good reception from the home support for Sangare as he enters the fray to replace Yarmoliuk. He's already earned plenty of fans in these parts, as his name rings out from the home end.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:27 , Arthur Ferridge
69mins: A raft of substitutions in the offing now. Hickey and Sangare come on for Kayode and Yarmoliuk.
Chelsea are readying Acheampong, but he isn’t coming on just yet.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:26 , Arthur Ferridge
68mins: The short Chelsea corners aren’t amounting to much today. Henderson takes one short to Rogers, whose cross to Welbeck is turned behind for a second corner.
Schuster misses his clearance and the ball drops into the six-yard box, but Chelsea cannot turn it home. The follow-up sees Neto launch a ball into the box from deep, but again, no shot comes.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:24 , Arthur Ferridge
66mins: Palmer’s marauding run gets the ball over to Neto, who cuts inside and tries to force a short despite being double-teamed. Chelsea showing shades of frustration now.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:22 , Arthur Ferridge
64mins: As things stand, Chelsea will head into the international break winless in three and without a clean sheet in their last 21 Premier League matches.
Yes, you read that right. 21 matches.
Brentford 1-0 Chelsea
21:21 , Arthur Ferridge
63mins: That is perplexing defending from Chelsea. Anthony was completely alone in the box when he put that corner away. Lacroix was closest to him and looked absolutely baffled.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
21:20 , Arthur Ferridge
Well, they've been breached. And the defensive woes continue once more. Undone by a classic Brentford set play, and MacPhee is perplexed in the Chelsea dugout. Schuster hangs highest and Anthony, unmarked, ghosts in to nod home from close range. The inquest begins between Martinez and Henderson.
GOAL! Brentford 1-0 Chelsea | Anthony '61
21:19 , Arthur Ferridge
Anthony puts Brentford in front with his first goal for the club! For all Chelsea’s awful attacking set pieces tonight, they are undone by a defensive one. It is textbook stuff - a corner is headed back across the box by Ajer and Anthony is in acres of space to nod home.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
21:17 , Arthur Ferridge
59mins: Chavarria bears down on the Brentford box and has plenty of black shirts in support.
He opts to go on his own, though, despite having Palmer, Neto and Welbeck available for the pass, and blazes his shot into the stands.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
21:16 , Arthur Ferridge
59mins: Thiago has a speculative pop from about 20 yards and sends it well high, well wide.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
21:14 , Arthur Ferridge
Not quite the start we'd hoped for in this second half. Anthony went close with a header that looked to brush Martinez's fingertips after excellent wing play from Damsgaard, who danced past Rogers as if he weren't there. The offside flag spared the £117million man's blushes. Otherwise, we're back to no real efforts on goal.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
21:12 , Arthur Ferridge
54mins: Fofana loses the ball in a dangerous area and Brentford race forward, but the visitors do well to fall back into their shape and frustrate them. The move comes to nothing as Damsgaard shoots tamely wide.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
21:08 , Arthur Ferridge
51mins: Martinez does superbly to get a hand to Jaidon Antony’s close-range header. As with Welbeck, he was then flagged offside.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
21:07 , Arthur Ferridge
49mins: Palmer plays Welbeck in behind with a smart through-ball, but Yarmolyuk does well to put him off his shot before the offside flag goes up.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
21:06 , Arthur Ferridge
48mins: Another Chelsea free-kick routine crumbles into ignominy. This one was taken short to Chavarria, whose shot-come-cross floated harmlessly out of play.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
21:04 , Arthur Ferridge
46mins: The second-half gets underway with a Kayode long throw, but the play is blown dead before it reaches its destination as Igor Thiago has wrestled Emi Martinez to the floor.
2ND HALF: Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
21:03 , Arthur Ferridge
We are back underway at the Gtech!
First-half pictures

Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
20:51 , Arthur Ferridge
Not the best first half in terms of entertainment, it has to be said. Chelsea disjointed in attack, but managing the home threats well at the back. Thiago has tried to rough up the centre-backs, but they have stood up to the task. What will the second period have in store?
HALF-TIME: Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:46 , Arthur Ferridge
There’s the break. Far from a classic, but the match has improved the longer it has gone on. An intriguing second period is certainly on the cards.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:46 , Arthur Ferridge
We will have just the one added minute.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
20:44 , Arthur Ferridge
Yarmoliuk gets away with a cynical tug on Welbeck as the Chelsea striker looks to dart towards the box, haring after the ball played through. Nothing doing, says the referee, who then finds a furious Levi Colwill in his face just seconds later.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:43 , Arthur Ferridge
43mins: A Brentford attack comprising three separate shots ends with Lewis-Potter bending one into the waiting hands of Martinez.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
20:42 , Arthur Ferridge
This west London derby - if you can really call it that - has a bit of spice to it now. Neto gets bodied by Lewis-Potter, while Andrews still fumes on the touchline. Some choice chants directed at Henderson as he saunters over to take the Chelsea corner.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:42 , Arthur Ferridge
41mins: CLOSE! Schuster puts in a brave block with his chest to deny Rogers’ shot from inside the box. That may well be the best chance of the game so far.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:41 , Arthur Ferridge
41mins: Chelsea look to break but the move is cut short as Neto is deemed to have fouled Lewis-Potter. The Portuguese laughs the incident off.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:39 , Arthur Ferridge
39mins: Damsgaard gets the ball to feet on the edge of the area. He turns quickly and lets fly, sending his effort over the bar.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:37 , Arthur Ferridge
37mins: SAVE! Yarmolyuk comes up with Brentford’s first shot on target of the evening after some quality hold-up play from Thiago. Martinez gets down quickly to deny his low-driven effort from the edge of the box.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:35 , Arthur Ferridge
35mins: Rogers plays a sweet backheel pass to Welbeck, but play is pulled back as he had strayed offside. Alonso, apoplectic.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:34 , Arthur Ferridge
33mins: Third time lucky for the Kayode long-throw artillery, but this is the worst of the lot. It falls into no man’s land, and Fofana beats it clear.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
20:32 , Arthur Ferridge
Keith Andrews is in utter disbelief at some of these refereeing calls in the past couple of minutes. 'You're not fit to referee' rings around the Gtech after a dubious awarding of a free kick for Palmer after the challenge from Damsgaard and Janelt, and then calls for handball from Barco are waved away. Anthony then doesn't get the throw that he is craving off Chavarria, and 'S*** referee' breaks out in the home end.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:31 , Arthur Ferridge
30mins: Rogers and Palmer both look to be sizing up the free-kick but it is the former who shoots. His effort is tamely into the hands of Kelleher.
That compounds what has been a thoroughly forgettable opening half-an-hour at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:29 , Arthur Ferridge
28mins: Chelsea win a free kick on the edge of the box as Damsgaard and Janelt both appear to have fouled Palmer, however softly.
There has been a VAR check, unclear what for, but this is a big shooting chance for Chelsea now. Who will take this free kick?
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:28 , Arthur Ferridge
28mins: Palmer manages to find Rogers in the box, but the forward can only win a corner, which comes to nothing.
Chances have been few and far between for both sides so far. These set-pieces have been wasteful.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
20:26 , Arthur Ferridge
Alonso applauds despite Colwill's loose ball into the channel. It's not what he - or any of the Chelsea players and fans - want to see, but he's trying to keep morale high as the visitors search for that elusive opener.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:26 , Arthur Ferridge
25mins: Schade is down after what appears to have been an innocuous coming together with Fofana. He takes a moment before clambering back to his feet.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:24 , Arthur Ferridge
24mins: One more set-piece for Brentford as Kayode’s long-throw falls for Lewis-Potter to shoot. His effort is blocked. Emi Martinez has not yet had anything to do.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:23 , Arthur Ferridge
23mins: A second Brentford corner in as many minutes meets the same fate. Fofana the pertinent defender this time.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:22 , Arthur Ferridge
22mins: Damsgaard plays a great ball in, but Welbeck rises highest to clear.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:21 , Arthur Ferridge
20mins: A nicely-worked Brentford set-piece ends with the hosts winning a corner.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:18 , Arthur Ferridge
17mins: It just isn’t quite happening for Chelsea at the moment. Some nice moves coming out, but they all break down a pass too early. Most recently, a spell in possession ends with Barco overcooking a through-ball for Chavarria, gifting Kelleher a goal-kick.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
20:16 , Arthur Ferridge
An interesting tactical observation for Chelsea, with Barco jumping to sit on Yarmoliuk when the Brentford midfielder gets the ball on the half-turn. He's the one that the visitors are looking to stop to deny the hosts quick counter-attacking opportunities, which they so often thrive off.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:13 , Arthur Ferridge
13mins: It is a smartly-hit ball from Henderson, but it goes uncollected. Chelsea come again, and Palmer’s cross is met first by Kelleher, who is commanding his box well in the early stages.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:13 , Arthur Ferridge
13mins: Chelsea win a first corner of the evening. Henderson to take.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:12 , Arthur Ferridge
11mins: Neto’s free-kick is floated into the Chelsea box but is much too close to Kelleher. MacPhee looks, in a word, unimpressed.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
20:10 , Arthur Ferridge
A few boos for both Chelsea midfielders, but not as many as you'd have thought from the home support. Barco, for his World Cup antics with Jude Bellingham, and Henderson, well, you know why.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:10 , Arthur Ferridge
10mins: SAVE! Kelleher gets a strong hand to Neto’s close-range strike. Fantastic stop.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:08 , Arthur Ferridge
7mins: Palmer goes on a jinking run through the middle of the park but just seems to have tried one too many and is dispossessed by Janelt.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:07 , Arthur Ferridge
6mins: Chavarria plays Rogers in behind, but his cross is just slightly too high for Welbeck and Brentford deal with it before Palmer can pick it up.
Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium
20:06 , Arthur Ferridge
Austin MacPhee springs out to the front of the Chelsea techincal area as Michael Kayode winds up his famous long throw for the first time. No corny TV camera cuts this time, however, after the Reece James debacle last week.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:05 , Arthur Ferridge
4mins: Chelsea have possession in their own defensive third and Brentford do well to pressure them. Colwill is forced to pump the ball out of play. Kayode lobs a long throw into the box, but it is cleared.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:03 , Arthur Ferridge
3mins: Lewis-Potter plays Schade in behind and Fofana makes a clumsy but effective tackle to stop him dead. VAR checks for a penalty but quickly clears the incident.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:02 , Arthur Ferridge
1mins: Henderson is indeed booed as he makes his first touches on the ball. The Gtech is far from a cauldron, but what little ire there is in this stadium is being directed at Chelsea’s No14.
Brentford 0-0 Chelsea
20:01 , Arthur Ferridge
1min: Palmer leathers the ball out of play rugby-style from the kick-off.

Plenty of eyes on Danny Welbeck for Chelsea this evening. This is what he was brought in to do, to step in as an able deputy to Joao Pedro. Does the veteran still have what it takes to lead the line for one of the very best in the Premier League? Let's find out.
Here we go...

Oli Gent at the Gtech Stadium

An attacking lineup from Keith Andrews, with Kevin Schade and Jaidon Anthony flanking Igor Thiago, and Mikkel Damsgaard tucked behind the lone striker as the creative No10.
It will be on the Dane to pick up those pockets between the lines, crafting out chances for his big Brazilian team-mate and the inside forwards that will be looking to drift in off their flanks and add bodies in the box.

Mamadou Sangare has been handed a rest this evening after making a bright start to life in the Premier League.
He signed for Brentford as a club-record signing from Lens earlier this summer.
But Keith Andrews has effectively confirmed he will come off the bench, saying: "I've got no doubt Mamadou will feature heavily tonight.”

Henderson previews his debut
19:33 , Arthur Ferridge
“A lot has gone on in the last few months. Delighted to be back on the pitch, it has been a while so I’m just excited to be back.
“(My injury was) a little frustrating, but I have just tried to stay as fit as I can for this opportunity. I’m looking forward to it. It has been good to settle in with the team. Hopefully now I can get involved.”

A serious opportunity for Colwill to prove his worth as a leader as he takes the captain's armband in James' absence. The 23-year-old has been shown real faith by Alonso, who could so easily have named either of his veterans - Henderson and Welbeck - as skipper this evening.
Xabi Alonso explains Reece James injury

"He had a little injury in his hamstring. He tried, we waited until this morning, but he couldn't make it. Now we have enough time to prepare for the next one. He was just short of recovering." (via Sky Sports)
Big shoes to fill
19:10 , Arthur Ferridge
Joao Pedro has made a fine start to this campaign, racking up three goals and three assists in four league appearances.
Danny Welbeck takes his place tonight, though, and he will be tasked with replicating his team-mate’s remarkable link-up with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
What does he think of the task, though? Welbeck tells Sky Sports: “Just looking forward to the exciting project ahead.”
Henderson makes his bow
19:01 , Arthur Ferridge
It is something of a surprise to see Jordan Henderson start here.
These will be his first competitive minutes for Chelsea, now he has recovered from the broken wrist he sustained in a freak accident at the World Cup.
It is perhaps an even bigger surprise to see him start next to Valentin Barco, with Romeo Lavia dropping to the bench and Reece James out injured.
It’ll be interesting to hear Xabi Alonso explain his thinking...

Jordan Henderson makes his first start for his new club... against the side that he terminated his deal with to move to Stamford Bridge.
As expected - Joao Pedro is not in the squad after picking up an injury, so Danny Welbeck gets to be the focal point up top, flanked by the dynamic duo of Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
Henderson is partnered in the engine room by Valentin Barco, who gets his first Premier League start for the Blues since his move from sister club Strasbourg, and Pep Chavarria gets the nod at left wing-back too.

Here’s what Chelsea’s head coach has to say about Boehly’s departure...
“It's an important day for the club when there is an important change in the structure of the club and the ownership.
“A few points. I have to thank the former owners for the work they've done. I was not here, but I know that they played an important role, and now that Behdad [Eghbali] is taking more control, almost full control, I think it's good that the main one is clear.
“I have very good relations with Behdad. He was the one that came to Madrid to explain me the project, to convince me, and we are working well together. As I mentioned, this is phase one that we have completed in the project of the squad, and it's good, and now we move on together.”
A week of turnover at Chelsea

This week’s top headline at Chelsea was the news that Todd Boehly and Mark Walter had sold their respective shares in the club to Clearlake Capital, giving the Behdad Eghbali-fronted group total control.
The deal is thought to have been completed for just shy of £1billion, and brings to an end an era of decision-making gridlock at the club.
