Brentford hopeful of signing £12.6m Mikkel Damsgaard as Christian Eriksen replacement

Brentford are hopeful of signing Sampdoria midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard as Thomas Frank continues to bolster his squad ahead of their second Premier League campaign.

The Bees are in talks with the Serie A outfit over a deal for the Denmark international, who is expected to cost around €15million (£12.6m).

Damsgaard was one of the breakout stars of last summer’s European Championships as Denmark reached the semi-final before falling to England in extra time.

The 22-year-old opened the scoring in that match with a sensational free-kick and, at that point, was being linked with a number of Europe’s leading sides.

However, he has been plagued by injury since and was limited to just 11 appearances in Serie A last term, failing to register a single goal or assist.

Should he return to form, though, the hope is that Damsgaard could fill some of the creative void left by Christian Eriksen’s departure, as was the case at Euro 2020, when the youngster stepped into the starting lineup following Eriksen’s collapse in the Danes’ opening game against Finland.

Brentford were slow to get started with their transfer business this summer as they waited for a decision over Eriksen’s future, but have ramped up their recruitment since it became clear the former Tottenham man was heading to Manchester United.

The west London club have twice broken their transfer record in order to sign Bologna full-back Aaron Hickey and then Hull forward Keane Lewis-Potter, before goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha and centre-back Ben Mee both arrived on free transfers after leaving Lazio and Burnley, respectively.
