Brentford FC investigating 'awful' reports of fan chants after Liverpool game

Brentford Football Club says it is investigating 'awful' reports of fan chants following the club's match at Anfield yesterday.

The Bees went down 3-0 to Liverpool in the 2pm Sunday kick off, but after the match there were reports of vile chants and comments from a group of fans on a train back to London.

The chants were reported by Liverpool fan Mas Patel, who is based in London, and took to social media to call out the vile and racist language being used.

Mas reported that amongst the chants and comments made by the group, were racial slurs aimed at Jewish and Pakistani people as well as horrific homophobic abuse.

He said there were also awful slurs aimed at Liverpool fans in relation to the Hillsborough Disaster of 1989.

Mas tweeted an image of the group and said: "WTF! Some of the vile chants from a pack of Brentford FC fans are spewing on my train back from Anfield with my 12-year-old."

He went on to detail the specific grim chants he had heard from the group, which we have chosen not to repeat.

Mas then explained he had confronted the group and was forced to leave the train for his own safety.

He said: "So I call out the racist, homophobic chanting and I'm asked to leave the carriage. Ok, it's for my safety, I know. They picked up my tweets and fronted me. Anyway, they all saw how upset I was and thanks to the Brentford fan who stood up for me. Total respect."

Brentford FC have since responded to the upsetting reports from Mas and said an investigation is now under way.

A club spokesperson said: "We condemn any abusive or discriminatory behaviour that has taken place. We will be investigating and will follow up on these awful reports. We are a club for all. Discrimination has no place at Brentford FC.

“Through our Bee Together campaign we actively encourage behaviour which is consistent with the principles of fairness, respect and tolerance – those who can’t accept that are simply not welcome at Brentford.”

It is understood the police are now also investigating this incident and the club said it will fully co-operate.

Any Brentford fans identified will be subject to the club's sanction process which could include a significant stadium ban in line with Premier League sanctioning guidance.

A number of Brentford fans welcomed the quick intervention and condemned the offensive chants.

One said: "Please do, this is awful and we don't need them in our club."

Another said: "Absolutely disgusting, not representative of the majority of Brentford FC fans, they should be thrown out of the club and heavy fines imposed."
