Brendan Rodgers slammed for lack of sportsmanship in Leicester's win over Southampton

Brendan Rodgers issued a spiky response to Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl after his Leicester side were accused of lacking sportsmanship in their 4-1 win on Sunday.

There was little on the line in the final day encounter at the King Power Stadium but there was some needle between the teams after a bizarre drop ball decision, reports The Daily Record.

Referee Jon Moss stopped play for an injury while Southampton were on the ball but accidentally gave possession to Leicester on the restart.

James Maddison scored immediately after and Saints boss Hasenhuttl was left furious, revealing after the game he had asked Rodgers to let his team score an equaliser in the name of sportsmanship

He said: “I don’t want to speak about the performance but the decision was hard to understand.

“It changed the momentum and the first goal was the decisive moment. It is not acceptable and there was an offer from my side to let us go and score 1-1.

“Let us run and score the goal, they didn’t do it. This sums up the last few weeks for us. It’s a very important summer for us and we are not the brightest light on the Christmas tree.”

Former Celtic boss Rodgers though was having none of it as he responded soon after.

He insists there was confusion as to who should have had the ball - and says nothing would have come of it if Saints defender Lyanco had defended it properly.

"It was a lack of clarity on what actually happened. Was it a bounce-ball, was it a free-kick to us?" Rodgers said.

"The ball was obviously bounced and we played it back to Kasper Schmeichel. If the centre-half doesn't make a mistake there is no drama, he heads it back and Southampton has the ball.

"But he doesn’t. Then I think if there is any issue Jon Moss will blow up, but pretty soon after he points to the centre-sport.

"Clearly the Southampton players are unhappy. I understand the frustration, and they will be disappointed they didn’t defend it better, but all we can do is play to the whistle."
