Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has received a united thank you from Rangers fans over Calvin Bassey' s move to Ibrox as he prepares to earn the club a record fee in excess of £19 million.
The 22-year-old is poised to pen a four-year deal with Eredivisie champions Ajax with an option for a further year and will become the third most expensive arrival in Dutch football history when he completes his Ibrox exit. Bassey has skyrocketed and his performances en route to the Europa League Final earned rave reviews. That has seen the Champions League regulars line up the Nigeria international as a replacement for Lisandro Martinez after his £46m move to Manchester United.
It will signal a record transfer fee received for Rangers just months after the January sale of Nathan Patterson to Everton, with Leicester City receiving just £230k to allow Bassey to leave the English Premier League side. That has seen fingers pointed at Rodgers and his decision to allow the Foxes' academy graduate to leave the club back in 2020, with Rangers supporters all too happy to take a swipe at the former Celtic gaffer.
Ibrox diehards have been offering their thanks to Rodgers' thanks for the part he played in a bumper pay day for the Scottish Cup winners. One fan posted to Twitter: "Big thanks to Brendan Rodgers for allowing Leicester to sell Bassey to Rangers for few hundred k, Bassey will now become our record signing and put the club on a secure financial footing for years to come. Thank you Brendan."
Another chimed in: "Can we just take a minute to appreciate the fact Brendan Rodgers allowed us to sign Calvin Bassey for a couple of quid. Top Man."
Another smirking punter added: "Madness to think that Brendan Rodgers sold us Bassey for 250k and we're for selling him for 25m. Cheers Brendan!"
Despite the windfall arriving at Ibrox, one supporter rounded off: "I think the most important thing for us to do is to thank Brendan Rodgers for selling us Bassey for 230k."
