Steven Gerrard has been defended by former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers after he was axed by Aston Villa - as the Leicester City boss lamented the lack of "patience" in football.
The former Rangers boss watched his 10-man side go down 3-0 to newly promoted Fulham on Thursday night to leave them 17th in the Premier League table, and that proved to be the final straw for the Villa Park owners. They instantly announced Gerrard had been ditched just 11 months into his tenure. He walked away from the Scottish Premiership side after lifting the title during an unbeaten campaign.
He has returned just two wins so far this season with Aston Villa this term, but Rodgers reckons his former Anfield captain should have been given more time. The two faced off when on opposite sides of the Glasgow divide, and former Celtic boss Rodgers reckons there was not enough time handed to Gerrard in the Midlands. Rodgers himself has been under strain amid the Foxes' poor start to the season.
“He said: I’m bitterly disappointed for Steven, of course, because he did a fantastic job up at Rangers. He got the opportunity to come to the Premier League and I assume ambitions are to be up there in European football.
“It just seems the way of it now that every day a manager is losing his job or under threat to lose their job. Stability and patience seems to be running out in football. So I’m really, really disappointed because I believe given time and with that patience he could have got them to where he wanted them to be and where the club wanted to be."
