Brendan Rodgers issues clear statement on Wesley Fofana’s Leicester future as Chelsea push for £80m deal

Brendan Rodgers has once again insisted Leicester will not be forced into selling their star players this summer.

The club have not made a single signing so far in the transfer window, with financial problems proving a significant issue and meaning player sales are likely a necessity.

Kasper Schmeichel has left for Nice, while Wesley Fofana, James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy have all been linked with moves away from the King Power. Ricardo Pereira meanwhile is expected to be out for six months after rupturing his achilles, as Leicester’s issues mount up.

Fofana currently appears the closest leaving with Chelsea now turning their attention to the centre-back, who is likely to cost the Blues at least £80m. Newcastle have already had two bids rejected for Maddison, the second of which was an offer of more than £40m.

When asked about the futures of Fofana and Maddison, Rodgers admitted that Leicester are in a difficult position this summer but remained adamant that the in-demand duo would not be leaving the club.

“These players are not for sale,” Rodgers said in his press conference ahead of Leicester’s opening Premier League clash against Brentford.

“These are very important players to us. We’re in a situation where we need to move some players out but that doesn’t mean getting rid of anyone and everyone, and especially not our best assets.

“You don’t want to lose your top players, this is something that the club are very strong on. At this moment in time, James and Wesley are training very hard and getting ready for our game on Sunday.”
