Brendan Rodgers in Celtic 'talks' as return could hold key to keeping John Kennedy

Brendan Rodgers has held face-to-face talks with Celtic chiefs over a sensational return to Parkhead.

CEO Michael Nicholson and Chris McKay, head of finance, jetted out to Mallorca, where Rodgers owns a property, to sit down with the former boss on Saturday to try to thrash out the terms of a potential second stint in charge of the champions, according to the Daily Mail. Majority shareholder Dermot Desmond remains a huge admirer and ally of Rodgers after his success in the role first time around.

After being sacked by Leicester City, for whom he left Celtic midway through the 2018/19 season, angering a number of fans who had expected him to stick around for 10-In-A-Row, Rogers had planned to take a year out of the game to rest and recharge. But Ange Postecoglou’s departure from Glasgow in order to take up the reins at Tottenham may forced a rethink from Rodgers, with Celtic putting him on their shortlist of replacements.

Should the Irishman return, then keeping John Kennedy may become easier for the Hoops. Postecoglou wants to take his former No 2 to London with him, but Celtic are set to fight any attempts to lure the long-serving assistant away.

However, Kennedy was at Rodgers’s side as he swept all before him in Scotland. And the chance to remain with his boyhood club in Glasgow under a boss he knows well could well tempt Kennedy to stay put.

Chris Davies, who has long been part of Rodgers’ coaching team, is one of the front runners for the Swansea City job. Russell Martin is in the process of leaving to take over at Southampton, and Rodgers may well see Kennedy as crucial to his plans, especially if he is unable to bring Davies with him.
