Brendan Rodgers aims dig at Manchester United with Jonny Evans claim

Brendan Rodgers claims Manchester United would absolutely love to still have Jonny Evans playing at Old Trafford amid their defensive woes this season.

The 34-year-old progressed through the academy ranks at United and went on to play 198 matches for the Premier League giants. Evans was sold by United in 2015 before signing for Leicester City in 2018 after a three-season spell at West Brom.

Injuries have restricted Evans to only 16 outings so far this campaign, but he returned to duty last time out against Brentford. A first start since December could be on the cards for him at Old Trafford this afternoon (5.30pm). Leicester are also set to welcome back Wesley Fofana and Marc Albrighton.

As for United, meanwhile, they settled on Raphael Varane as a long-term partner for Harry Maguire last summer. It was an eye-catching move that cost United £34million, but Rodgers has hinted that they are still reeling from the decision to cut ties with Evans.

Speaking about his defender, the Leicester manager said: "I know how United feel because I've spoken enough to staff and people there. Jonny is a Manchester United player. It's as simple as that.

"You have only got to look at his performance level to know they would absolutely love to have someone like him, fully fit and playing at centre half. I'm pretty sure of that."
