Brendan Gleeson lands 'Outstanding actor' Emmy nomination for role in State of the Union

Irish acting legend Brendan Gleeson has been nominated at this year’s Emmys.

The live virtual ceremony was hosted by Curb Your Enthusiasm’s JB Smoove and Melissa Fumero of Brooklyn Nine-Nine along with Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma.

Brendan was nominated for his role in State of the Union alongside his co star Patricia for Outstanding Actor and Actress in a short form comedy or drama series.

Succession holds this year’s top spot with 25 Emmy nominations followed by Ted Lasso and The White Lotus (20), Hacks and Only Murders in the Building (17) and Euphoria (16).

Mr Scherma said: “Television continues to keep the world entertained, informed, and connected. With production at a historic high, the Academy has received a record number of Emmy submissions this season.

“As we prepare for the entertainment industry’s biggest night, we are thrilled to honour the innovators, creators, performers and storytellers who are propelling this platinum age of television.”

The smash hit “Stranger Things,” the first season of the South Korean thriller “Squid Game” and the final season of the crime thriller “Ozark” all landed nominations. “Squid Game” earned 14 nominations, the most ever for a foreign language show.

For best actor in a comedy, last year’s winner, Jason Sudeikis, in his role as a cheery soccer coach on “Ted Lasso,” earned another nomination. He will face the 2019 winner — and his former “Saturday Night Live” castmate — Bill Hader, for “Barry.”

And both will have to face someone who hasn’t won an Emmy since 1969: Steve Martin , for his role as a washed-up actor turned true-crime podcaster, in “Only Murders in the Building.”

The best comedic actress category will be just as competitive. Jean Smart, last year’s winner for her role as a stand-up comedian in “Hacks,” will face off against the 2018 winner, Rachel Brosnahan, from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Quinta Brunson, the breakout star from the rookie hit “Abbott Elementary,” got a first-time nomination. Issa Rae will get one last chance to try to pull off an Emmy acting win for her defining role in “Insecure.”

The best actress in a drama category features Zendaya, the 2020 winner for “Euphoria,” versus Laura Linney, for her final turn in “Ozark.”

Linney, a four-time Emmy winner, has been nominated for the role twice before, but has never won for it. Emmy voters have been known to try to honor series in their final seasons, and Linney might be their best way to do it.

It was a year of notable achievement for women. Almost half of the directors nominated in the scripted directing categories were women. This season also saw women receive almost 40% of the nominations in the scripted writing categories.

Thirty-four percent of this year’s nominees for Outstanding Writing in all writing categories were women. In total, there were 50 first-time performer nominees across all performer categories this season.

The 74th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live from the Microsoft Theatre on Monday, September 12.
