Breeding dogs with extreme characteristics that cause suffering must be recordable as an abuse crime, according to a vet association.
The Progressive Veterinary Association, also supports a ban of such dogs appearing in advertising and has called for their ownership and importation to be made a criminal offence.
The association has welcomed new inquiry into the welfare and abuse issues inside the UK's lucrative pet trade which has now been set up by the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs committee.
