Police have charged a man who allegedly had so much alcohol in his system that the initial breathalyser reading was "over range".
They will allege a further test back at Roebourne Police Station on Saturday evening showed the man had a blood-alcohol reading of 0.242, or nearly five times the legal limit.
Roebourne Police officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Mark Barratt said the driver was stopped in Wickham because there were no registration plates on the car.
"When they stopped the vehicle they ascertained the person had been drinking alcohol," he said.
"Unfortunately, at the time, the breathalyser actually blew over range, which means it was extremely high level of alcohol going into the system, into the machine.
"So the police took him back to the police station and later did a breath test where the calculation or the actual breath test result was 0.242, which is obviously extremely high."
The man has been charged with driving under the influence, driving under suspension, and driving an unlicensed vehicle.
Senior Sergeant Barratt said there was no need to drive in the small town.
"So if you're not sure, if you've been drinking, don't drive, and maybe ask for a lift. If not, perhaps you can even try walking."
He said Saturday's incident was really concerning.
"We're constantly out sending messages to road users to do the right thing, don't drink and drive," he said.
"It's very disappointing."
The man is on bail and will appear in Karratha court on July 19.
