The rampage took place along a shopping street called Vastagan in central Vasteras, a town around 90 kilometres (56 miles) west of Stockholm.

Police spokesman Magnus Jansson Klarin said one individual who is thought to have acted alone has been arrested.

He said: "We receive several calls in a short time that there has been several [people] injured."

Mr Klarin added: "We can not rule out that more people have been injured, he continues.

"[The area] has been blocked off and the police have a large presence at the [scene]."

The incident is being treated as attempted murder, police sources told Swedish media.

At the start of March, a suspect was shot by Swedish police after eight people were injured in what was believed to be a suspected terror incident.

The man in his 20s is said to have attacked several people in central Vetlanda in the south of the country just before 2pm GMT.

Police shot the man, who some locals suggested was wielding an axe contrary to earlier reports of him having a knife, before arresting him, Aften Posten reported.

Speaking of the victims, Thomas Agnevik, press spokesperson at Police Region East, told Expressen: "There are varying injuries and I can not describe it in more detail.

"It seems that someone or some are seriously injured and some less seriously injured."

A little over a week later, a teen was arrested after killing two women in a knife attack at a school.

The victims, both in their 50s, were employed at Malmö Latinskola in Sweden where the incident occurred on Monday afternoon.

Police have said an 18-year-old man, who is a student at the school, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Officers are said to have rushed in with guns drawn and evacuated the school - though other reports suggested pupils were kept on lockdown inside.
