Saul Niguez tests positive for Covid-19 as Chelsea star misses Lille win

Chelsea midfielder Saul Niguez has confirmed he has tested positive for Covid-19. The Spaniard missed Wednesday evening's win in the Champions League round of 16 against Lille.

The Blues loanee took to Twitter to confirm the news. Saul wrote: "Unfortunately we have tested positive for COVID. We are all fine for now, nothing serious. Now it's time to take care of ourselves and improve until we are negative."

This means Saul will likely be missing for Saturday's FA Cup tie with Middlesbrough, but there is a break then until the start of April, where he will hopefully be ready once again.

Saul was not in the squad for Wednesday evening's win against Lille, with Jorginho and N'Golo Kante starting in midfielder for the Blues in France. The Spaniard may have been in contention to take on Boro this weekend as Thomas Tuchel looks to give everyone an opportunity.

It's been a difficult time since Saul joined the club on a season-long loan deal from Atletico Madrid last summer. The 27-year-old midfielder has made just eight appearances in the Premier League - with only four of them coming from the start.

Speaking last month, the Spaniard admitted it was a tricky start for him when adapting to life in England. He said in Chelsea's 10 questions feature: "The beginning wasn’t easy for me," he said. "I have changed my whole life, moving from Madrid, leaving Madrid with my family, changing language and culture, even the small things like driving on the other side of the road!

"Everything has changed - the stadium, team-mates, my whole life. The truth is it hasn’t been easy but I’m very grateful to my team-mates and the club for making it easier for me to adapt. My English is improving and everything is becoming a bit easier."
