BREAKING: Rishi Sunak fined by police for failing to wear seatbelt in video

The Prime Minister has been fined after failing to wear his seatbelt in a moving car while filming a video for social media. Lancashire Police has handed Rishi Sunak a fixed penalty notice after investigating the matter, which was caught on camera for the PM's own promotional purposes.

He visited Lancashire yesterday (January 19) after the government had announced the latest round of successful bids for Levelling Up funding, which included a new Eden Project site in Morecambe. But keen eyes noticed Mr Sunak was not wearing a seatbelt in the video shared later on, which showed him in the back seat of a moving car following the visit.

In a post on Facebook this evening, a spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "You will be aware that a video has been circulating on social media showing an individual failing to wear a seat belt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire. After looking into this matter, we have today (Friday, January 20) issued a 42-year-old man from London with a conditional offer of fixed penalty."

Downing Street previously said the PM had made a 'brief error of judgment' by removing his seatbelt while the video was filmed. A spokesperson for Mr Sunak told reporters this morning: "It was a mistake and he’s apologised and thinks it’s important to do so as people should wear their seatbelt.”

Infamously, it's not the first fixed penalty notice Mr Sunak has received over the past year. He was fined last April for breaking lockdown rules while chancellor on June 19, 2020, in a gathering alongside then-PM Boris Johnson.
