BREAKING: Nick Bosa, 49ers agree to massive contract extension

Just ahead of the 49ers’ first practice of the year their biggest offseason box has finally been checked. They’ve agreed to a long-term deal with superstar defensive end Nick Bosa.

Bosa, 25, is set to sign a five-year deal worth up to $170 million with $122.5 million guaranteed according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal will make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in football and the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history. Schefter also reported Bosa will likely play Sunday in the season opener vs. the Steelers.

There was never any rush from either side on getting a contract extension done with Bosa heading into the fifth and final year of his rookie deal. And both Bosa and 49ers brass indicated confidence throughout the offseason that an extension would materialize.

However, this is the first time the 49ers have taken so long to get a deal done. They typically wait until somewhere near the start of camp, so it wasn’t a huge shock when Bosa didn’t report for camp right away. Each day he was absent though came with a little more surprise, though there wasn’t any real indication that the two sides wouldn’t come together on an agreement. It just wound up taking several weeks longer than the team might’ve originally anticipated.

Bosa in just four NFL seasons has earned Defensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year trophies, while racking up 156 tackles, 56 tackles for loss, 43.0 sacks, one interception, four pass breakups and eight forced fumbles in 51 games.
