Young boy fighting for life after being hit by a car as man is arrested

A boy was rushed to hospital after being hit by a car in Oldham last night - with a man arrested on the scene.

Emergency services were called to Vulcan Street at around 6.30pm yesterday (Thursday) to reports of a collision between a child and a car. The child was a young boy, whose age has not been released at this stage.

He was rushed to hospital from the scene with life-threatening injuries. A man - aged in his 40s - was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving.

He has since been released on bail. Last night, a cordon was put in place on a stretch of Vulcan Street as investigations were carried out.

Accident investigation officers could be seen taking pictures and placing evidence markers on the road within the police tape. The road was reopened at around 10.20pm.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At 6:25pm last night (Thursday 30 March) Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Vulcan Street, Oldham. The pedestrian, a young boy, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries that are believed to be life threatening.

"A man in his 40s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He has since been released on bail."
