HSBC has said it will shut 69 bank branches due to a shift to online banking, in a move affecting around 400 staff.
The bank said it would try to replace the shuttered branches with other banking services, like new cash machines and pop-up outlets.
HSBC said it is closing branches because Brits increasingly prefer online banking.
It said fewer than half its customers are active users of its branches, and that average footfall was down 50% since 2017.
The pandemic has increased the pace of this, the bank said.
HSBC head of UK branch network Jackie Uhi said: “Our branches continue to support people with their more complex banking needs, but the way we can do this has also evolved, with the addition of banking hubs, community pop ups and continued use of the Post Office network.
"Rather than a one-size fits all branch approach, it’s an approach built around the way different customers are choosing to bank in different areas."
The bank is trying to reshuffle 400 affected staff into other roles.
Last year banks were closing almost 100 branches a month over the summer.
Consumer group Which? has called for banks to pause all closures, as many Brits face being left without access to cash.
Which? money editor Jenny Ross said: "There has been an alarming number of bank branch closures in recent years, and many consumers who rely on banks to access cash for everyday essentials and face-to-face services will be concerned about what these latest closures mean for them.
Last month NatWest confirmed plans to close 32 outlets across the UK.
HSBC last announced a big round of branch closures in January 2021, with 81 closed in the year.
The reason was the same - fewer people using its physical branches.
