Harry Kane scores 267th Tottenham goal to break Jimmy Greaves' record

Harry Kane scored past Manchester City to eclipse Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham Hotspur's record goalscorer.

The England captain, 29, fired home against Pep Guardiola's side to score his 267th in all competitions for Spurs, moving him beyond the legendary Greaves. Kane's goal against Fulham in January saw him draw level with the Three Lions icon and leave him on the verge of 200 Premier League goals.

It took Kane a mere 15 minutes to break the record when City came to town, giving Tottenham a surprise lead thanks to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's smart layoff inside the penalty area. The 29-year-old cooly slotted home past Ederson with a simple finish, scoring against the team he was close to signing for in the summer of 2021.

After Kane joined Greaves on 266 goals, ex-Spurs striker and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker said: "What an incredible achievement for Harry Kane to equal the great Jimmy Greaves as all-time top scorer for Tottenham. And, yes, before you start, I know he's not won anything. Also, that fact doesn’t make him any the less of a footballer."

Kane's record-breaking goal came 12-and-a-half years after he made his debut for the club under Harry Redknapp. Following a brief stint at Norwich in the top flight and a loan at Leicester in the Championship, Kane made his first Premier League start in April 2014 and opened his account against Sunderland.

Kane's maiden strike for Tottenham came some years earlier, when he scored against Shamrock Rovers in the Europa League in December 2011. Few could have predicted the centre-forward would go on to become the talisman for club and country, but he shrugged off the 'one-season wonder' tag he was labelled with in his breakout 31-goal 2014/15 season to establish himself as one of the great marksmen of the 21st century.

Kane - who is England's joint-record scorer with Wayne Rooney - netted a career-best 41 goals across all competitions in the 2017/18 campaign and he has racked up three Premier League Golden Boots on his road to greatness.

England captain Kane admitted his pride at the record - but was still regretting a missed second half chance at Craven Cottage which would have seen him take it outright. He said: “I’ve been playing football long enough now to know where the goal is, that’s just instinct and the joy of scoring goals.

“I should have scored another really, I could maybe have volleyed it but in the moment I thought the header was a better option. Hopefully we can use the victory today to get a bit of momentum. Clean sheets are really important to us, we just had to go back to what got us into the Champions League last year.

“We do a lot of fitness work for sure, last season we came really strong towards he end of the season.”

Recent reports have stated that Kane will look to stay in north London, with manager Antonio Conte insisting they should now start to dream of winning silverware.

Spurs boss Conte said: “We are talking about a player that has a fantastic ability and good experience. For sure, I would like to help him and his teammates to do something important, to win something with Tottenham because he loves Tottenham in his heart.

“And it should be good if together we were able to win something. It’s important to have this record but it could be more important if he could have a trophy. We have to be dreamers.”
