A number of alerts have been issued across Greater Manchester to warn residents of possible flooding.

Several rain and wind weather warnings are still in place until Monday, and have been issued for every borough in the region. Heavy rain is expected to hit the region throughout the majority of Sunday.

Flood alerts mean that 'flooding is possible', the Environment Agency says.

It advises residents to be prepared and to:

  • have a bag ready with vital items like insurance documents and medications in case you need to leave your home
  • check you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies
  • plan how you'll move family and pets to safety

Where the flood alerts are in Greater Manchester

A flood alert for the River Glaze catchment - including Leigh and East Wigan - warns that river levels are forecast to rise due to heavy rainfall.

“Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Glaze, with low lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around Moss, Hey, Bedford and Borsdane Brooks and their tributaries,” the government website states.

“Flooding is possible at low lying land and roads around Moss, Hey, Bedford and Borsdane Brooks and their tributaries from 04:00 AM on 20/02/2022. We will continue to monitor levels closely.

“Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.”

Meanwhile, an alert for the upper and lower River Irwell give similar warnings of possible problems around Farnworth, Whitefield, Little Lever, Radcliffe, Bury, Heywood, Whitworth, Wince and Worsley Brooks.

Flooding is forecast in the upper Irwell area to affect locations particularly around low lying land and roads around Rivers Beal, Roch and Croal, Limy Water and their tributaries from 4am on Sunday.

While the lower River Irwell may flood around the Rivers Irk and Medlock, Wince and Worsley Brooks and their tributaries from 7.30am on Sunday.

There are two alerts in place on the River Mersey - affecting areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston in Trafford, and Hyde, Ashton-under-Lyne, Denton, Stalybridge and Glossop in Tameside.

Flooding is forecast to affect locations with low lying land and roads, particularly around Micker, Cringle, Sinderland and Poynton Brooks and around the Rivers Goyt, Tame, Sett and Etherow, from 4am on Sunday.
