Donald Trump's lawyer confirms they'll appeal sexual abuse ruling in E. Jean Carroll case

Donald Trump's lawyers have said they will appeal a sexual abuse ruling that was reached by jurors today in the civil rape and defamation trial filed by former columnist E. Jean Carroll.

Speaking to reporters outside the federal courtroom in New York City, Trump's lawyers said "there are plenty of issues here" and confirmed there would be an appeal.

Trump's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, told reporters: "For me it's about the results.

"While it was strange, part of me was obviously very happy that Donald Trump was not branded a rapist.

"I didn't think there should be any liability findings so we'll pursue that."

His comments come after the former US president was found to have sexually abused writer, E. Jean Carroll but jurors ruled that he did not rape her.

Mr. Trump, who did not attend the trial, had insisted he never sexually assaulted Ms Carroll or knew her.

Mr Tacopina went on to say that the seven-day civil trial has been a "circus atmosphere" and having Trump there 'would have created even more of a circus.'

"What more can he say other than 'I didn't do it'. It's very simplistic to say he should have testified," he said

"He had nothing to say other than what he has already said."

He said she made it up to fuel sales of a 2019 memoir where she first publicly revealed her claims and to disparage Trump for political reasons.

However, Ms Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, cited excerpts from Trump's October deposition and his notorious comments on a 2005 "Access Hollywood" video in which he said celebrities can grab women between the legs without asking.

She urged jurors to believe her client.

Nine jurors spent just three hours deciding the civil claims of battery and defamation in Ms Carroll's case.

Disgraced Trump will have to pay pay E. Jean Carroll around $5million in damages.

The damages breaks down as $2.7million (£2.4million in compensation, and $280,000 (£250,000) in punitive costs.

Ms Carroll, 79, will also be awarded another $20,000 (£14,000) in damages relating to a claim of battery.

The verdict could have enormous ramifications for the former president who has already launched his bid for re-election to the White House for 2024.

Adding further comments to the appeal plans, Trump's lawyer Joe Tacopina said the Access Hollywood tape should not have come into this trial.

"There's plenty of issues to appeal," he told reporters.

"We're in one sense gratified that the rape claim was rejected but I'm not happy that he was liable for anything."

After the ruling Ms Carroll said in a statement: "I filed this lawsuit against Donald Trump to clear my name and to get my life back. Today, the world finally knows the truth. This victory is not just for me but for every woman who has suffered because she was not believed.

"I would like to express my deep and lasting gratitude to all those who have stood by me from the start, especially my incredible and fearless legal team, led by Robbie Kaplan, who never, ever backed down in pursuit of truth and justice."
