Ben Davies signs new Tottenham contract as defender shines under Antonio Conte

Ben Davies has signed a new three-year deal with Tottenham, to keep him in north London until 2025. The Welsh international made the move to N17 in 2014 and despite some up and down form, he has become a key player in Antonio Conte's squad.

The defender made 29 Premier League appearances last season, with two goal contributions. Davies smoothly slotted into the left centre-back position and helped create a strong back line, which helped the Lilywhites secure a fourth place finish in the 2021/22 season.

Following the signing of his new deal, the 29-year-old explained what it meant, in an interview with Spurs. "I'm delighted to sign my new contract," Davies admitted. "I think after last season and the summer this club has had, there's no more exciting time than right now, to be at this club.

"I was enjoying my football and when the opportunity came from the club to extend my contract, I was more than happy to do so. I've had some really enjoyable times here. It really feels like home now and [hopefully] it continues.

"This is a significant amount of time in football, especially when a career is quite short and in football, people move around a lot and it's an honour for me to be here and to keep it going," he added.

Davies has already made 270 appearances for the north London club and made 28 goal contributions. The defender has become a senior player and a leader at the back, trying to make an impact at both ends of the field.

"There's still a good core of us that have been here a very long time now and it's the same faces, not just in the team but around the building everyday and it becomes a family," Davies continued.

The Welshman then went on to talk about the transfer business Tottenham have already completed this summer. "We've brought players in that we hope will improve us as a squad and make us more competitive throughout the season," the defender explained.

The 29-year-old will have to work extra hard when the 2022/23 season begins, as Clement Lenglet's arrival means there is now competition for the left centre-back spot. Davies picked up an injury in Tottenham's pre-season friendly against Sevilla, although there is hope he will return for the opening game against Southampton and the defender is looking forward to the upcoming campaign.

"It's going to be a pretty jam packed schedule around that World Cup, so we're going to need everybody to play their part. It's an exciting season for both club and country," the Welsh international admitted, as he spoke on playing for his country in the World Cup.

"It'll be a bit strange, stopping mid-season for that tournament, but I can't wait. It's been a long time since Wales have been there and we've given everything to get there, so we just have to enjoy it," Davies said.

"We've got a great group here [at Tottenham]. Like I said, not just on the pitch but as a collective and it is a very exciting time and in a season that we're all looking forward to."

The defender is clearly still enjoying his time in N17 and things seem to only be getting more positive, after Conte's arrival and the six summer signings so far. Davies' focus will now be on getting fit for the opening day of the 2022/23 campaign, continuing to work hard to get regular game time, before preparing for the World Cup.
