SpaceX boss Elon Musk warns Earth is set for oblivion
Every species on Earth will eventually be wiped out due to the Sun’s expansion, according to billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.
The SpaceX CEO gave the gloomy prediction in response to a discussion on mass extinction events, of which there have been five so far on the planet – the most famous being when a giant asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
That particular devastation caused 76% of the world’s species to be terminated by the impact and its subsequent after-effects.
Now, scientists have discovered evidence that the sixth mass extinction event is under way, based on a study on biodiversity loss of the Earth, the Express reported.
Boris Johnson to face MPs as threat of no confidence vote looms
Boris Johnson is set to face an increasingly angry chorus of his own party's MPs amid reports the 54 letters which would trigger a no confidence vote in the PM could be received on Wednesday (January 19).
Reports on Tuesday night suggested MPs furious at the Prime Minister’s handling of the "partygate" scandal engulfing Westminster had been angered further by Mr Johnson’s insistence that nobody had told him a party at Downing Street would break rules set by himself.
And that especially those in the 2019 intake, many of whom have slim majorities after votes were "lent" to them during the last election, were preparing to submit their letters to the chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench MPs, Sir Graham Brady.
Schools 'must reform how children are taught to read'
The manner in which children are taught to read in England is in need of urgent reform, more than 250 experts have said in a letter to the Government.
According to research, led by academics from UCL, England’s teachers now focus more on teaching children how to read by blending sounds together, known as synthetic phonics, than on reading and enjoying whole texts.
The UCL researchers have joined more than 250 signatories of an open letter calling on the UK Government to change its policy on reading.
In the letter they demand that reforms “centre on a wider range of approaches to teaching phonics and reading, enabling teachers to use their own judgement about which is best for their pupils”.
Boris Johnson expected to set out new plans to lift Plan B coronavirus restrictions
Boris Johnson is expected to announce an easing of England’s coronavirus restrictions on Wednesday.
The Prime Minister and his Cabinet will examine the latest Covid-19 data on Wednesday morning before making a statement in the Commons on Wednesday afternoon.
England’s Plan B measures currently in place, which include guidance to work from home, the use of the Covid pass and mandatory mask wearing in shops and on public transport, are set to expire on January 26.
Rudy Giuliani among Trump allies subpoenaed by riot panel
The House committee investigating the Capitol insurrection has issued a new batch of subpoenas to some of Donald Trump’s closet advisers, including Rudy Giuliani, as the committee inches closer to the former president.
The committee is continuing to widen its scope into Mr Trump’s orbit, this time demanding information and testimony from Mr Giuliani, Jenna Ellis, Sidney Powell and Boris Epshteyn.
All four publicly defended the president and his baseless voter fraud claims in the months after the 2020 election.
