Jair Bolsonaro, the populist former president of Brazil, has been formally charged with plotting a military coup in an attempt to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat.

The radical far-right former South American leader has been accused of planning an “authoritarian power project” that reportedly included poisoning the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
