Brazen dog thieves steal dog from garden of Scots home

Brazen dog-nappers took a beloved pet from his owner's garden in Dundee. Mastiff Bear, 11, has been missing for almost a week after two women and a man stole the pet from a block of flats on Bonnybank Road around 7.30pm last Thursday .

CCTV captured the heartless trio entering the close, where they wait to be buzzed into the block. They can then be seen walking off with the pooch on a lead before getting in a car and driving.

Bear's owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, has been left worried sick over what is happening to his dog and believes his dog has been targeted.

He told the Record: "It seems so strange to take a dog of Bear's age. I am just hoping he isn't been used for baiting. For the first three nights after he was taken I didn't sleep a wink.

"I'm worried sick about him. I've had him for the last 10 years, since he was about a year old, so he's just part of the family. They've clearly purposely come to take him. They had a blanket or food to entice him and had the car to drive off."

Bear's owner saw the car, which he believes to be a Land Rover pull up through his window, but didn't think anything of it. Bear was outside in the back garden at the time.

After watching them try a buzzer and be let in by another resident, he saw them appear around 10 minutes later. He didn't recognise anyone from the group.

He then went to get Bear from the garden, but the pooch was nowhere to be seen. He immediately flew into a panic and began going round his neighbours to see if they saw anything.

He added: "Nobody knew anything. I then went and looked at my CCTV and saw them with him. I reported it straight to the police.

"I've also contacted the SSPCA and an appeal went out on a missing dogs site but nobody has heard or seen anything. I'm just desperately hoping someone might recognise them.

"Bear is such a friendly dog, outgoing and he gets on really well with other dogs. Loads of people know him around here. It's very sad."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.20pm on Thursday, 16 March, 2023, we received a report of a dog being stolen in the Bonnybank Road area of Dundee. Enquiries are ongoing.”
