WASHINGTON — Virgin Galactic founder Sir Richard Branson expressed concern over the treatment of Ukraine by the U.S. Congress after lawmakers left out funding for the war-torn nation in a bid to avert a government shutdown.

What Happened: Branson, a British business magnate, discussing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to Washington, in a blog post, said he fears that U.S. support for Ukraine might diminish.

Branson highlighted the disdain some U.S. Congress members have for Ukraine’s fight, notably Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).

“…I was rightly worried that U.S. support for Ukraine would lose momentum and scale. Some members of Congress have made no secret of their disdain for Ukraine’s fight, with Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene spitefully calling a vote for more aid a “blank check” for a “proxy war,’” said Branson.

During a recent congressional standoff over the U.S. government’s spending bill, aid to Ukraine was omitted from a last-minute stopgap bill aimed at averting a government shutdown.

“It’s a disgraceful outcome that could have far-reaching consequences – forced by a small group of Republican extremists who leave many to wonder whose side they are really on,” said Branson.

Branson emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s struggle, stating it is a defense of more than just their sovereignty. He urged the allies of Ukraine to maintain their commitments, particularly military aid.

“All of this is devastating, not just for Ukraine and its brave people, but also for those who see the bigger picture. It cannot be said often enough: Ukraine’s troops are defending far more than their own sovereignty and national identity. Their struggle is ours” contends Branson.

Why It Matters: The British billionaire is an outspoken advocate for Ukraine. On the day of the invasion in February last year, he strongly criticized Vladimir Putin for a “unilateral, unwarranted act of aggression” and showed support for Russians who opposed the war in an opinion piece.

He also traveled to Ukraine later that year to meet President Zelenskyy to see some of the devastation wrought by Putin’s “appalling invasion.”

Branson also supported “crippling sanctions” against Russia to defeat the rise of totalitarianism in Europe.
