Brandon Williams sends message to Erik ten Hag over Man Utd future

Brandon Williams has told incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag that he is desperate to play for the club ahead of next season.

The Norwich loanee has spent the season at Carrow Road garnering some much-needed first-team football after initially breaking into the Red Devils squad under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tutelage. It has been a tough campaign with the Canaries rock bottom of the Premier League, though.

Williams has made 27 appearances for Norwich this season as a left-back but can also play at right-back and that versatility might come in handy at Old Trafford. The current crop of full-backs have had a disastrous year and other options are being looked at.

Ten Hag has plenty to sort out ahead of his arrival at the end of the season when he will leave Ajax after four years at the club. The 52-year-old has been brought in for his attacking style of play and his ability to develop youngsters.

And that will excite Williams, who is desperate to make the cut at United while he has already played 50 times for his boyhood team. Ahead of next season, the 21-year-old has insisted he has the credentials to be an important member of the squad under Ten Hag.

"What I want to do next year is play for Manchester United at left back and that's my job," Williams told Norwich's matchday programme. "That's what I'm determined to do because it's my life and I'll do anything for that.

"I know I can play in this league, and I know I can get to the top and that's what I want to do."

There could be wholesale changes to the squad this summer with full-back one area that could be revolutionised. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been dropped from the starting XI while he reportedly joins Alex Telles on the transfer list this summer.

That would open the squad up to potentially two full-backs on either flank while Williams could fulfil both duties in one, making his status an attractive one for a coach. Ten Hag also was brought in to develop the youngsters at United, making this a potentially exciting campaign for the Norwich loanee.

And the England Under-21 international knows all about competition having fought for his spot under Dean Smith, who has told his squad that he picks on merit - not on whether they are at the club next year or not ahead of their impending relegation from the Premier League.

Williams added: "There are great full backs at this club, but there's competition all over the pitch. You need someone who is going to push you, when you don’t get too comfortable and think the position is your position.

"With the manager now he’ll change it straightaway if you're not up to his standards and his demands. He did that to me against Crystal Palace when he felt like I wasn't playing well and he dropped me for that game and he came and spoke to me about it."
