Brandon Flowers says that every major label passed on Mr Brightside: "They would say, ‘When did you record this song again? What producer did you bring in?’ And it's like, ‘No, that's the same song. It's exactly the same recording that you heard before'”

It might be one of the biggest songs of the century, but Killers frontman Brandon Flowers says that when he and his fellow band members first pitched Mr Brightside to the big record companies when they were trying to get signed, no one was particularly taken with it.

Reflecting on the 2003 song’s beginnings and legacy with BBC Radio 2’s Vernon Kay, Flowers says that it was only after the Killers had been signed to indie label Lizard King in the UK and Mr Brightside became a hit that the majors came knocking. What’s more, they were convinced that something had changed since they first heard it.
