Brandon Aiyuk wasn’t shy about dishing on his contract negotiations with the 49ers during an interview with Ryan Clark’s podcast, The Pivot.
While he did indicate he’ll be working out at the 49ers’ facility, which tracks with a video he posted on social media Friday that showed him driving up to Levi’s Stadium, he also didn’t commit to staying with San Francisco when asked point-blank what uniform he’d be wearing in the 2024 season.
“If I were to take a guess, probably a Niners uniform,” Aiyuk said. “If not a Niners uniform, probably a Washington Commanders uniform. If not a Washington Commanders uniform, probably a Steelers uniform.”
It’s worth noting this interview was before Aiyuk’s meeting with the 49ers on Monday, and reporting since then has indicated Aiyuk hasn’t requested a trade.
However, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that San Francisco winds up moving on from Aiyuk if they can’t come together on a long-term extension. At that point Washington, a club the 49ers have had trade talks with about the receiver, and Pittsburgh could certainly be destinations given their assets, needs and financial situations. That would explain Aiyuk’s lack of assurance on what uniform he’ll be wearing next season.
History tells us the 49ers and the receiver will ultimately come together on a deal, and the fact he went to the team facility for workouts is a good sign that things are still trending that direction, even if Aiyuk still isn’t certain.
