Brain fade! Fortune goes India's way as Mitchell Marsh rules himself out when he wasn't

NEW DELHI: In a rare and bizarre occurrence, Australia batter Mitchell Marsh ruled himself out despite not edging the ball on the second day of the second day-night Test against India in Adelaide.

Marsh went through a surprising brain fade moment as he assumed that he had edged one R Ashwin delivery and didn't even bother to review it and headed straight back to the pavilion.

The strange sequence of events took place in the 64th over of the innings when a tossed up Ashwin delivery went past the outside edge of Marsh's bat as he leaned forward to defend it.

With all the three -- the bat, ball and the front pad -- in close proximity, Marsh assumed that he had nicked it although there wasn't an enthusiastic appeal from the Indian camp.

Soon after the ball got into the gloves of keeper Rishabh Pant, Marsh appeared to walk off and that prompted umpire Richard Illingworth to raise his finger.

However, Snicko later showed that there was daylight between bat and ball and Marsh just threw his wicket away.

Before his unlucky dismissal, Marsh had previously survived an lbw review from India late in the first session.

In the second session, Marsh walked back after making 9 off 26 balls.

After the drama around Marsh's dismissal, Travis Head raised his 8th Test century, taking Australia's first innings lead closer to the 100-run mark on the second day.
