Bradley Lowery Foundation's Sunderland summer fun day this weekend, in support of holiday home project

The Bradley Lowery Foundation is running a family fun day in Sunderland this weekend, to raise money for an exciting new project for families with unwell children.

The charity was founded in 2017 in memory of Bradley Lowery - who died aged six following a tragic battle with neuroblastoma. It will transform Thompson Park into a family friendly scene with plenty to do this Saturday (16 July).

Work has started for the five-bed holiday home in Scarborough, which will allow poorly children and their families to make special memories while spending valuable time with one another. The reasoning behind the location is because Bradley and his family made memories of their own in the seaside town, during various trips throughout his life.

In collaboration with Let’s Talk SARA, the Bradley Lowery Foundation will take to Thompson Park in Southwick to create a family fair - filled to the brim with amazing attractions. As well as an abundance of fair ground rides booked, visitors can make the most of the usual raffles and tombola events.

Those who love classic cars will be able to see some of the finest, with a number of wheelers available for photo opportunities and motor buffs to talk about their history. Those who like to visit markets frequently will also be catered for, with a wide range of sellers and stalls present on the day.

Furthermore, a number of food and drinks stalls will also be available to pick and choose from for visiting foodies. The likes of Greek gyros and cuisine, bakes and cakes, and other street food vendors will all be playing their part to make the event special.

Tyne and Wear Fire Service and Northumbria Police's raid team will also be in attendance to talk about the hard work the region's emergency services put in, aspiring youngsters to follow in their footsteps.

Entry is free and the event will run from 11.30am until 4.30pm.

Speaking about the cause, the BLF, said: "Often when you have an unwell child the family is separated with one parent being the main care giver and the other parent having to go to work or look after the other children. After many meetings, it was decided that BLF would create a luxury holiday home so that families spend time making memories, having fun and enjoying every moment together.

"I had a vision on how I wanted the holiday home to look so after numerous meetings with Richard Marsden from BDN, we came up with a design fit for a king. BLF are being supported by Merlin’s Magic Spaces who have offered to design and create the play rooms.

"Super Brad’s Pad will offer up to 10 people per visit, so that grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins can also enjoy being a part of the experience. Families will be referred via 3rd party organisations and will be offered a stay on a need by need basis.

"Families will get the chance to stay either Monday to Friday or Friday to Monday. The home will host around 100 families per year.

"If you can support in anyway, including doing a fundraising event, giving a donation, offering materials or labour then please get in touch we would love to hear from you."

Bradley won the nation’s hearts as he bravely battled brain cancer before he died of neuroblastoma on July 7, 2017, in the arms of his mum Gemma and dad, Carl. Bradley became a mascot for his beloved Sunderland and in the months before his death, leading England out at Wembley alongside his hero Jermain Defoe.
