Bradford fire: Residents evacuated as firefighters tackle blaze at high-rise block

Residents were evacuated from a high-rise block in Bradford after a basement fire sent smoke into most floors of the building.

Fire crews from five West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue stations with specialist aerial appliances raced to the scene of the blaze in Bolton Road, Bradford at shortly after 6pm yesterday (Monday). They used eight breathing apparatus, two hose reels and a large jet to tackle the fire that involved two cars and sent smoke rising into the majority of floors of the property.

All residents were safely evacuated from the building as the crews from Bradford, Fairweather, Shipley, Stanningley and Cleckheaton brought the fire under control before using four high-powered fans to clear smoke from the affected floors.

Around the same time, three West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews tackled a fire at a domestic property in Clough Lane, Mixenden, Halifax. The crews from Illingworth, Halifax and Odsal were called out to the blaze which is believed to have started in a chip pan.

They used breathing apparatus as they assisted a man suffering from smoke inhalation and gave him oxygen therapy before handing him to paramedics for further treatment. They then used a high-powered fan to clear smoke from the property.
