Rugby League commentator Brad “Freddy” Fittler is copping a bit of heat after a second cringy exchange with Olympian Jess Fox following the NRL grand final.
In case you missed it, back in August, former NRL-great Fittler was involved in a pinch of controversy after an awkward moment with Olympic Kayak superstars Noemie and Jess Fox at a Penrith Panthers game. The sisters are huge Panthers fans and were invited as guests of honour to a home match after they won big at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Prior to kick-off, Fittler was set to interview the sisters. But before their big yap, the kiss cam made its way around the stadium, landing on random people and asking them to smooch.
“Just waiting for the kiss cam to come… on me,” Fittler said as he stood between Jess and Noemie.
The Olympians laughed it off before Fittler swiftly changed topics by asking them if they liked the footy environment.
You can watch the cringy moment below.
Although people online labelled the chat a “trainwreck”, Channel Nine later released a statement saying Fittler’s comment wasn’t in connection to the gals.
“An activation was taking place in the stadium last night with a kiss cam that was not part of the TV coverage and Brad’s comments related to that activity on the ground,” the statement read.
“Brad’s comments were not directed to the Fox sisters, no malice was intended and no offence was taken.”
While this is already the kind of exchange that would keep me up at 3am, it only got worse for Fittler last night after the Penrith Panthers won their fourth consecutive premiership when he headed into the changerooms to do the yearly victory interviews with the players for the network.
The spotlight quickly went to Fittler — who played for Penrith before he famously switched to the Roosters — when his own commentary team spotted him with a beer in hand having a yarn with some of the players rather than doing his actual job.
“Look at him … he hasn’t even got a microphone in his hand, he’s got a beer,” Paul Gallen quipped.
“Is he going to be able to put two words together?” Cameron Smith chimed in before Darren Lockyer added: “He swapped a microphone for a Tooheys … he’d be telling stories about ‘back in my day’.”
In an effort to get out of the lighthearted chiding from his colleagues, Fittler attempted to palm off the beer to the next person he was chatting to — Penrith mega-fan Jess Fox who was celebrating the win with the fellas.
“Jess, can you take that? You can have that,” he said, to which she politely declined with a laugh.
“I’m still working,” he said, putting the beer down on the floor before asking Fox if she had a good night.
All in all, it was a pretty light-hearted exchange. But — in truly public holiday spirit — let this serve as a reminder to not jump on the piss until you’ve officially clocked off from work.
