Boys jailed for teenager's stabbing murder

Security has intervened after a supporter of two boys jailed for murder approached the 15-year-old victim's grieving parents outside a Brisbane court.

The two boys high-fived after year 10 student Angus Beaumont was fatally stabbed through the heart north of Brisbane in March 2020.

Angus died after a knife was thrust 14cm into his chest in a fight with the two teenagers at Redcliffe.

The two boys - who can't be named - were 14 at the time.

One is now 16 and the other is 17.

Angus' mother Michelle Liddle said the two boys had laughed about her son's death and described the jail sentences handed down in Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday as a "joke".

The 17-year-old received a seven-and-a-half year jail term while the 16-year-old - who inflicted the fatal wound - was handed a nine year sentence.

Both boys - who have long criminal histories with one offending from the age of 11 - will serve only 60 per cent of their terms due to "special circumstances".

"It's got to change ... this is just so wrong," Ms Liddle told media outside court.

"These kids are playing these courts, or these courts are just not taking into account the victims' lives."

Ms Liddle said the two boys had shown no remorse and accused them of making up rap songs about the fatal stabbing.

She also claimed the two boys' supporters and families had intimidated them.

As she spoke to media outside court, a supporter of one of the boys approached the grieving family before being moved on by security.

"They have mocked us, they have laughed about our son's death ... they do not care," Ms Liddle said.

The boys were found guilty of murder by a jury in June.

CCTV footage shown during the trial captured the incident with the two boys pursuing a group of youths that included Angus, claiming they were "ripped off" in a drug deal.

Wearing knuckle dusters and handed a knife by another member of his group, Angus confronted the duo and he was stabbed in the chest after being set upon in a two-on-one fight.

The two boys are seen congratulating each other by slapping hands as they "skipped and ran off" as Angus lay dying nearby.

Justice David Jackson said the hand slap was a gesture that indicated that they had "won the fight".

"The fight lasted only a matter of seconds, only one lunge connected," he said.

One boy was on probation and the other was on bail at the time of the murder.

Neither had previously received custodial sentences.

The boy now aged 17 also pleaded guilty to three more offences including dangerous operation of a vehicle after stealing a car and sparking a police chase in May 2022 while on bail for murder.

His history included an incident in October 2019 when he stabbed another 15-year-old in the shoulder with scissors.

The now 16-year-old boy had a "repeated pattern of responding to conflict with aggression including the use of a knife", Justice Jackson said.

But both boys will serve 60 per cent of their sentences due to factors including their young age, mental health and "fractured" childhoods, Justice Jackson said.

Time already served was also taken into account.

The 16-year-old has served 720 days and the 17-year-old 776 days pre-sentence custody.

"I'm so angry. All these things they take into account for these boys aren't excuses to kill someone," Ms Liddle said.
