Liverpool missed out on signing Jesper Lindstrom despite the Danish midfielder being a boyhood fan of the Anfield giants, he has revealed.
Late in the summer transfer window, Lindstrom signed for Serie A champions Napoli in a £30million switch from Eintracht Frankfurt with a number of clubs interested in his signature.
The 23-year-old has detailed an approach from Liverpool amid their hunt for new midfielders, and explained why he turned down the opportunity.
“It was Liverpool and I am a Liverpool supporter, so it would’ve been a madly fascinating experience, but would it have been an intelligent move?” he told Danish newspaper Tipsbladet.
“If I don’t play, then I may as well sit in front of the TV and watch them play there while I am at a different club. I am at an age now where I have to play football.
“This is why I think Napoli represent a good change. It is one of the best clubs in the world and they said I will have many opportunities to play.”
Liverpool managed to bolster their midfield nonetheless, after the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Ryan Gravenberch joined from Bayern Munich in a £34.2m deadline day deal after Wataru Endo arrived from Stuttgart. Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister also signed earlier in the summer.
