Boy who died while swimming in quarry was 'one of a kind', says heartbroken family

The parents of a teenager who died while swimming in a quarry have paid tribute to their "loveable" son who was "one of a kind".

Jamie Lewin, 16, was with his uncle at East Quarry near Wigan, Lancashire when he got into difficulties in the water during the start of the heatwave on July 9.

Police recovered his body later that day, making it three young people who have lost their lives there after the deaths of two teenagers in 2015 and 1999.

His dad, Luke Kenyon, and mum, Steph Lewin, received a phone call saying he had struggled in the water and arrived separately at the quarry, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Luke, 34, described his son as a "bright young boy" who "had a vision of what he was going to do".

He said: "[Jamie] and his mum were best friends, they had just got back from holiday with each other.

"He was such a nice, bright young boy. He was never in any trouble and was known by a lot of people. Everyone liked him. He had great plans and had a vision of what he was going to do.

"He worked hard to get his qualifications and we're all very proud of him."

Steph, 32, told how her son was "amazing and one of a kind" and "so loveable".

She said: "He was amazing and one of a kind. He was just a one-off and he would make everyone laugh.

"He was so loveable as well. If anyone needed anything he would be there. He was the first one to defend you and he had so many good friends as well as being one as well."

In 2015, 13-year-old Miracle Godson died after getting into difficulties in the quarry's deep waters. In 1999, 17-year-old Craig Croston drowned at the Appley Bridge quarry.

Last week, residents claimed around 50 youths were continuing to endanger themselves by trying to access the dangerous quarry's waters.

Many added they had been campaigning for the disused quarry to be filled in or drained for years.

In a previous statement, Lancashire Police said: "We were called by the Ambulance Service around 9.40pm on Saturday (July 9) to a report a boy had entered the water and got into difficulty at Dawber Delph, Appley Bridge.

"Emergency services attended the scene and following a search the body of a 16-year-old boy was recovered from the water. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. He was later identified as 16-year-old Jamie Lewin from Southport."

Jamie's family confirmed that anyone who knew the promising young boxer, who also had a passion for bikes, is welcome to join in celebrating his life.

A funeral route will set off at 11.20am from Brookfields Funeral Care, stopping at Longacre in Churchtown before arriving at St Cuthbert's Church. His family want as many bikes and vehicles as possible to join throughout the day.
