Boy savagely mauled in face by neighbour's dog and spends his third birthday in hospital

A boy suffered brutal injuries on his face when he was attacked by a dog last week.

Kameron Swaab, a three-year-old boy residing in Woodward, Dallas County, Iowa, suffered significant injuries when he was bitten on the face by a neighbour's dog.

He is now recuperating at home after his third birthday, which he celebrated in the hospital due to the incident.

The young boy, who has nine siblings, was subsequently admitted to a local hospital the following day after developing a fever and an infection from the dog bite.

On May 24, a fundraiser initiated by Ellie Altman, a friend of Kameron's parents, Sara and Patrick Swaab, provided an update stating that the child had undergone stitches and received morphine during his hospital stay.

The following day, on May 28, Ms Altman announced that Kameron had been discharged from the hospital after spending a week confined to a hospital bed.

She said: "Throughout this terrible event Kameron remains in the best of spirits with his spunky laugh, his love for dinosaurs, and receiving lots of cuddle time from his mum.

"Over the last 48 hours he has been seen by many specialist including a plastic surgeon to remove stitching, clean the wounds, and continue watchful observation to prevent further infection."

In an update from May 27, - the day of Kameron's birthday - Altman added: "Kam's bloodwork continues to show improvement.

"The IV antibiotics are working well! The stitches the surgeon put in yesterday look amazing and we are praying for minimal scaring!

"Unfortunately, Kameron spiked a fever again yesterday after surgery, and he is still hovering around 103 degrees Fahrenheit [39.4 degrees Celsius] even with IV meds.

"We were hoping to celebrate him today, but his little body is working so hard to heal that he has been sleeping most of the day.

"Thank you for all the birthday wishes, thoughts and prayers! It means a lot to us knowing we have friends and family that care so much for our little guy."

The next day, May 28, Ms Altman revealed that Kameron had been released from the hospital after spending a week in a hospital bed.

She said: "Next steps for his medical follow-ups are unclear at this time but the family is excited to be together under one roof! Thank you again, all!

The family chose not to disclose the breed of the dog involved in the incident or its fate thereafter. Additionally, it was not revealed whether the parents intend to press charges.
