Boy pleads guilty to culpable driving over Canberra highway crash that killed two girls

A 16-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to culpable driving after two teenage girls were killed in Canberra earlier this month.

Police allege the boy and another teenage passenger fled the scene after the Toyota sedan he was driving left the Monaro Highway at Hume and hit a tree on October 9.

A passer-by found the wreck and alerted emergency services, who found the two girls, aged 14 and 15, dead in the car about 8:10am.

Officers said they knew neither when the crash happened nor how long the girls had been in the car before emergency crews arrived.

The car was damaged so badly that workers found it difficult to determine its make and model.

The boy appeared by video link in the ACT Childrens Court this morning.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of culpable driving, and guilty to a charge of driving unaccompanied while he was a learner.

However, he has not yet decided how he will plead on a fourth charge: failing to stop and assist after a crash.

His lawyers said he would await the results of autopsy reports before making a decision.

At the time of the incident, Detective Acting Inspector Brian Tadic said police were investigating whether wet weather had played a role in the incident.

To date, 18 people have died on ACT roads this year, the highest toll since 2010.
