A 10-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" after he was trapped under a car when he collided with the vehicle while riding his scooter. Leo Penson, from Pembrokeshire, was airlifted to hospital on Friday after he was extracted from beneath the Skoda by emergency crews.
He is now in a stable condition at the University Hospital of Wales where he is receiving treatment for his extensive injuries. Family friend Gem Louise Phillips, who set up a JustGiving page to help Leo’s family cover some of the financial costs of his recovery process, said: "Leo has five dislodged broken ribs, three fractured ribs, a punctured lung caused by the dislodged broken ribs, and he’s also broken all of his right side with two broken bones in his right leg which means he is going to be plastered from hip to ankle. We also understand that he has suffered bruising to his intestines."
Emergency services were called to Bush Street in Pembroke Dock just before 7pm on Friday, October 7. At the time Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed that the Pembrokeshire Roads Policing unit was investigating the crash involving a white Skoda car and a child. They said: "The child sustained serious injuries and was conveyed to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff by air ambulance where they remain in a stable condition."
According to Gem schoolboy Leo was crossing the road on his scooter when he was hit by the car. Emergency crews had to use a jack to free him.
She added: "There’s no doubt that Leo is very lucky to be alive but we’re still unsure how long he is going to be in hospital for. We’re just asking people to donate whatever they can, no matter how big or small, as I know it’s going to mean the world to him and his family at this hard time."
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information that could help officers with their investigation is asked to report it to Dyfed-Powys Police either online at: https://bit.ly/DPPContactOnline, by emailing 101@dyfed-powys.police.uk, or by calling 101.
