A police car was vandalised and a teen boy suffered a serious facial inury in a mass brawl at Broughty Ferry beach, it has ben revealed. Dundee Live told earlier today how the shocking incident involving 'over 100' young thugs happened at about 6.30pm last night.
It was confirmed how officers and the Scottish Ambulance Service attended to get the situation under control.
While locals in the area took to social media to describe the chaotic scenes.
One witness to the terrifying violence claimed a young person had been stabbed in the incident, but this was denied by officers.
And this afternoon, a Police Scotland spokesman gave Dundee Live more details of the incident.
They said: "An investigation is under way following an incident in Broughty Ferry on Monday, 11 July, 2022.
"Around 6.50pm, police responded to a report of a disturbance in Castle Approach, Broughty Ferry, involving approximately 80-100 youths.
"A 15-year-old male suffered an injury to his face and a police vehicle was vandalised when officers were engaging with the crowd.
"Officers are continuing enquiries as they work to identify those involved."
And the spokesperson added: "Information circulating on social media suggested a more serious incident had taken place, however, officers are keen to reassure the public that these rumours are incorrect.
"Patrols around this area will be stepped up in a bid to provide reassurance and curb antisocial behaviour."
Writing on the local Broughty Ferry Facebook page, one mum said many of the group were drunk and claimed there were reports that one youngster had been 'stabbed'.
She said: “Just took the girls to broughty ferry beach had to leave early as there was over 100 kids between 12-18 absolutely steaming fighting."
And she added: “Kids getting bottled, one women said one of them has been stabbed absolutely unreal, young kids crying witnessing it.
“Whatever is going on in Dundee with young kids is actually crazy. If you have kids between these ages please make sure they’re ok!”
Another local, Chris Roth, wrote: “Was on beach around 6-7 PM and saw a mob of youngsters throw stones, bottles and sand at an elderly couple. Litter everywhere, have never seen the beach in such a state.”
While Broughty Ferry resident, Lorraine Mcintyre, added: “Think the Ferry needs community policing as there are crowds of youngsters hanging round beach area.
“There are families using the beach and the behaviour is bad. Something needs to be done as why spoil it for everyone”
Local Labour councillor Pete Shears also added his voice to the concerns.
He said: “I have requested a meeting of the council's community team, local councillors, and the police to find out what is being done about the littering and antisocial behaviour.
“Shocking scenes last night.”
Commenting on the violence, Chief Inspector Ross Fitzgerald said: “We want everyone to enjoy these open spaces safely. Disruptive and criminal behaviour is not acceptable. I can assure you that work is ongoing to ensure those involved are located and identified, with anyone involved in criminality being dealt with robustly and charged in respect of any criminal behaviour committed.
"The vandalism to the police vehicle now renders that resource inoperable, depriving the local community of important resources as we continue our efforts to keep our local communities safe.
"Parents are encouraged to be aware of where their children are and what they are doing in the evenings. Members of the public will see an increased police presence in the Broughty Ferry area as local officers are supported by those from national divisions, in order to provide reassurance and deter any further acts of antisocial behaviour.
