An 8 year old boy from Whitley Bay is swimming in the North Sea every day this month to raise money for Cancer Research UK, after learning about his grandad's leukaemia diagnosis.
Dominic Oxborough learnt from his mum Kate about his grandad's diagnosis, and he was originally unsure about what it meant, but after hearing about how people can be live on and be cured by the work done by Cancer Research UK, he decided that he wanted to raise money for the organisation.
The suggestion from Dominic was that he could go in the sea every day and get sponsored for doing so, and ever since his mum has been taking him to beaches like Cullercoats and Tynemouth before school to help complete his challenge.
Kate Oxborough has spoken about the fundraising that her son has been doing and how it has also been good for him and has changed him in a positive way.
"It's amazing to see Dominic doing something so amazing and especially that he's doing it with his grandad. It has made him realise that a lot of people around him are going through similar things, and he has been able to talk to other kids at school about it.
"He was already quite confident but he has become even more confident now that he knows he's helping other people. He has been able to challenge himself and he has been so enthusiastic about the whole thing which is great to see", she said.
Dominic himself has given his thoughts on what made him want to raise money for Cancer Research UK and how it makes him feel that he is helping people in this way.
"I love swimming and I thought that this would be a really fun thing to do to help raise money for Cancer Research. I want to raise money so that they can make more medicines to help people like my Grandad John."
