Boy, 5, dies in parents' arms after suffering rare syndrome affecting only 1 in a million

A five-year-old boy died in his parents' arms after suffering from a rare syndrome that only affects one in a million people.

Sam Liew, from Derby, was rushed to hospital in March last year after experiencing the first of a series of increasingly debilitating and ultimately catastrophic fits.

Doctors determined Sam had developed Febrile Infection Related Epilepsy Syndrome (FIRES), believed to be an exceptionally rare reaction to a run of the mill virus such as a cold or flu. He had no prior history of seizures.
