Boy, 16, who drowned while cooling off in Salford Quays with pals was 'kind young man'

A teenager who died while swimming in Salford Quays has been named and pictured.

Kalen Waugh, 16, has been identified locally as the boy who drowned after getting into difficulty in the water on Saturday.

He took a dip with friends during a day out at the former dock area as temperatures soared across the UK.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed his death is not being treated as suspicious, though formal identification is yet to take place.

GMP said the teen's body was located on Saturday evening following a major search operation, before being recovered overnight.

On Sunday, flowers and balloons were left among tributes at the scene, with one reading: "RIP Kalen".

The teenager had just finished his GCSEs at New Park School in Salford and was due to start at Salford College in September on the Multi-Trade course.

Kalen Waugh was about to start at Salford College (New Park School Salford)

He was described in a statement released by the school as "a cheeky chappy who certainly kept staff on their toes".

Headteacher Almut Bever-Warren then told The Mirror: "Kalen was a very popular student with us, he had a college placement for September, mum was very proud of him that he had sat his GCSEs, the first in the family."

She said staff sent a text out on Sunday to all the parents at the school to inform them of the news.

Ms Bever-Warren continued: "I had spoken to the parents of the Year 11 lads who Kalen had been with on Saturday night while we were waiting [at the scene] because I didn't want them to hear it via social media.

"You might be aware we are a special school, I didn't call an assembly, I went class by class, I've been here for 17 years and I've never cried, but I cried whilst I told them what it was like waiting with mum for the body to be retrieved.

"I said to them I do not want to stand there again with one of your mums and the children were very respectful and accepted that."

Conrad Asquith, who owns Swans Minicabs taxi firm where the teen's mum works, told The Mirror: "He was a kind young man with his life ahead of him.

"He was just enjoying a day in the sun with his friends and they decided to go in the water and cool off and Kalen got into difficulties.

"Salford Quays has open water swimming and many people go each year when it’s warm without knowing the dangers."

He added: "His mum is a valued member of staff and is being supported by family and friends at this awful time and feels unable to speak to anyone at the moment."

Worryingly, young males were seen diving into the water just hours after the tragedy on Sunday morning despite warnings from GMP.

Conrad has also set up a JustGiving page to raise £2,000 for Kalen's funeral costs.

Friends posted tributes on Facebook.

In a separate post, they added: "Rip kalen was only with you the other week and now your gone can't seem to believe it." [sic]

Another commented: "We will all miss him he was such an amazing boy."

A statement released by New Park said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Kalen.

"Kalen had been swimming at the Quays with some friends and unfortunately got into difficulties.

"His friends all tried to help but they had to be rescued because of the currents.

"Kalen was a pupil of New Park.

"He was a cheeky chappy who certainly kept staff on their toes… but not for very long, you just couldn’t stay angry with him for too long.

"Mum had been so proud that he had sat his GCSE exams and had been offered a place at Salford College from September. He was a clever lad who would have done fantastically well.

"We will miss him and our thoughts and prayers are with Mum and Uncle."

Police have warned people to swim in reservoirs (ASP)

In a statement on Sunday, GMP said: "The body of a teenage boy has been recovered from Salford Quays after we were called to reports of a person getting into difficulty in the water yesterday.

"Saturday. Shortly after 6.15pm police were called and emergency service colleagues from GMFRS and NWAS attended.

"Sadly, a body was located in the water later that evening and was recovered by specialist partners overnight.

"Although formal identification has not yet taken place, the body is believed to be that of a 16-year-old boy who was last seen struggling in the water after swimming with friends.

"His family has been kept updated and are being supported by specially-trained officers at this extremely distressing time.

"Enquiries are ongoing but detectives from Swinton CID are – at this stage – confident that there aren’t any suspicious circumstances, and a file is being prepared for the coroner."

Detective Inspector Joanne Johnston, of Swinton CID, said: "Yesterday evening's events are nothing short of devastating and my thoughts are with the friends and family of the young boy who lost his life in such awful circumstances.

"We are doing all we can to support the boy's family at this incredibly difficult time, and we are focused on ensuring they get the answers they deserve as to how this tragedy occurred.

"From our enquiries so far, we are confident that there are no suspicious circumstances and that this is such a sad reminder of the dangers of entering open water, whatever the weather.

"We remind the public to avoid being tempted to cool off in reservoirs, rivers, canals or ponds.

"We all want to enjoy the warm weather; please make sure you do so in a safe way. Think of your family - look out for your friends."
