Boy, 15, stranded in hospital in Turkey after horror fall through glass hotel door

A 15-year-old boy has been left seriously injured after he fell through a glass door in a hotel while on holiday in Turkey.

Liam Staniforth-Burke, from Hattersley in Tameside, remains stranded in hospital in Antalya where he has already undergone one operation.

His family have now started an urgent fundraiser to pay for his medical bills, which include a second op and a flight home, as he did not have any health insurance.

Liam, a pupil at Alder Community High School in the village of Gee Cross, Greater Manchester, flew to Turkey with family friends on Sunday night, reports Manchester Evening News.

He was staying at Belpoint Beach Hotel and Spa in Antalya when he suddenly fell through a glass door to the balcony of his room, causing him to suffer severe cuts to his neck, stomach, hip and hands.

The teen was rushed to Akdenis university hospital for emergency treatment. His mum Steph, who wasn't on the holiday with him, flew out to Antalya on Wednesday morning to be at his bedside.

Describing her son's condition, the 34-year-old told the M.E.N: "He's gone into the hotel room and tried to open the door and fell through the glass. He stood up but he was in total shock. He was taken to reception and then straight to hospital.

"He lost a lot of blood. He's got a big cut from his ear to his shoulder. They did an operation on him up the wound with stitches. But they've done tests on him since and his mouth on the right-hand-side isn't moving and he needs another operation before they even start that.

"We need another £4,000 on top of the £1,600 the hospital has already charged."

She added that Liam is "OK at the moment" but cannot talk and is not allowed to eat, and would be left with a "big scar".

Steph admitted her son did not have travel insurance - and said the family friends with him, who have known him since he was a baby, were 'devastated'.

It has led her to urge anyone heading abroad to make sure they are covered, and she said: "Make sure they take that travel insurance out. He definitely needs help so I can get my son back home."

By Thursday morning the family's Gofundme page had already passed its £5,000 target by £200.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has been contacted for comment.
