CHICAGO — A 13-year-old boy is accused of jumping into a car with two young children inside during a West Side carjacking that ended when he crashed moments later on Wednesday evening.
No one was injured during the carjacking, which happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 700 block of North Spaulding Avenue in the city’s East Garfield Park neighborhood.
The boy, who was not being named because he is a juvenile, was charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking and aggravated battery using a deadly weapon, Chicago police said.
A 26-year-old woman who was working as a food delivery driver at the time stepped out of the car momentarily while two children — a 4-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy — were still inside, according to police.
“That’s when the 13-year-old took off with the kids,” said Officer Anthony Spicuzza, a Chicago police spokesman.
The boy commandeered the vehicle, a 2013 Nissan Altima, and rammed it into the woman as he fled the scene, according to police, who said he was placed into custody without incident moments later after crashing several blocks away.
