Boxpark to close in Shoreditch after last-ditch talks fall through

Boxpark has announced it will close its Shoreditch site after last-ditch talks fell through.

The company will close the east London site, dubbed “the world’s first pop-up mall”, by the end of the summer.

It will open up nearby sites in Liverpool Street and Camden later this year, as well as expanding to Bristol in 2025.

The Standard understands Boxpark had been working with Hackney Council to try and extend its lease at the Shoreditch site but it was ultimately unsuccessful.

Boxpark first opened in Shoreditch in 2011, with the Croydon site arriving in 2016 and the Wembley spot following in 2018.

All three locations house bars and food stalls, set within stacked shipping containers.

The Shoreditch site also includes a range of independent stalls and has hosted a wide range of pop-up events.

Boxpark has reached the end of its lease in Shoreditch and notice has been served by landlords Bishopsgate Goodsyard, the company said.

Planning permission has been granted to transform the site into new homes and office space as well as a new park.

The Shoreditch site is thought to have driven more than one million visitors each year to east London and hosted more than 250 independent brands, generating nearly £100million in value for the city.

Last month Boxpark took over shipping container complex Buck Street Market in Camden, with plans for a “comprehensive renovation” of the site.

Boxpark agreed a deal with TfL’s property arm Places for London to manage the 12,000 square foot site, which attracts 30 million visitors each year.

The Camden site will be officially launched in Autumn.

Boxpark CEO Simon Champion said: “Whilst our time in our current site at Shoreditch is coming to an end, we look forward to celebrating all that we have achieved at the venue over the summer before we go on to relaunch Buck Street Market in Camden and mark the launch of our first BOXHALL branded site in Liverpool Street this year.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank the millions of customers, tenants, and partners we have welcomed and worked with over the last 12 years.

He continued: “With Shoreditch being our home for so many years, we will return as soon as we find the right opportunity, and we’re already in conversation with key stakeholders about a new offering for our Shoreditch customers.

“However, in the remaining time we have left in Shoreditch we will work as hard as possible to support our team with the transition and aim to relocate our 30+ tenants and their staff at our other sites, whilst giving all our wonderful customers an unforgettable farewell.”
