Boxing coach says community has rallied round him as he opens new gym

Rutherglen boxing coach Archie Durie says the community has rallied round him as he opened a new gym in Blairbeth.

The popular coach has been overwhelmed by support, which saw a £2000 GoFundMe target quickly realised to go towards the new premises.

Durie was given short notice to vacate his former facility on Cambuslang Road, following a fall-out with his landlord just after Christmas, but found his new gym within weeks.

And he says it was a brilliant turnout to see his autistic grandson Robbie cut the ribbon on the new gym.

Archie said: “There has been quite a reaction. We reached the £2000 we asked for in about six days, it was some response we got.

“The response has been very positive; local people have been coming by, welcoming us, and coming in.

“There has been a great support on social media as well and it has been good.

“This is a new chapter for me. We didn’t want this to happen, but it’s all positive stuff.”
