Boxer arrested on suspicion of murder after British woman found in suitcase in Athens

  • Sharif Ahmadzai, a 26-year-old Afghan national and Christian aid worker, has been arrested in Athens on suspicion of murdering Elisabeth-Jane Ross, a 38-year-old Scottish woman, whose body was found in a suitcase in an abandoned building on 18 July.
  • Mr Ahmadzai is alleged to have admitted to hiding Ms Ross's body in a suitcase after she was reported missing, and has been accused of intentional homicide by Greek officials, a charge he reportedly denies.
  • The suspect's wife, Alaina Hall, a US citizen, reportedly alerted police after noticing her husband's absence and tracing his location to Ms Ross's apartment, also handing over money and a new iPhone her husband had given her.
  • Mr Ahmadzai, a champion boxer, arrived in Greece as a child refugee approximately 10 years ago and, with his wife, co-founded the NGO Love Every Nation Athens, through which they are believed to have known Ms Ross, who was also a Christian volunteer.
  • Legal documents suggest Mr Ahmadzai is accused of using Ms Ross's phone to text her family and friends after her death and withdrawing thousands of euros from her bank account, with police stating his wife's testimony and CCTV evidence were crucial to the investigation.
