Bowling Green had a very rough first half Saturday in its home matchup against Buffalo, entering halftime down, 31-0. That’s not great for a conference game against the Bulls, who entered the contest at the top of the MAC East.
But perhaps the worst thing that happened to the Falcons in the first half was this horribly botched fake field goal attempt that was oh so close to ending in total disaster. Instead, it was just a mild disaster.
On 4th-and-goal on Buffalo’s 7-yard line, Bowling Green lined up to kick a 25-yard field goal with about a minute left in the first quarter. A good kick would have done little to close the gap against Buffalo’s 17-0 lead at that point.
So the Falcons opted for a fake field goal.

Kicker Jack Sauder was serving as the holder, took the snap and (badly) passed it to punter Mason Lawler. The pass was too long and out of Lawler’s reach, and when he tried to just fall on it, Buffalo’s Keyshawn Cobb scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown.
Literally the opposite of what Bowling Green envisioned for that trick play, but the Falcons got lucky as the touchdown was called back thanks to an illegal block. So, not a total disaster but still hilarious.
